Clinical Rotations | Central Oregon

Please note: Due to our limited capacity, St. Charles’ Clerkship Program will not be accepting applications for visiting students from unaffiliated schools until after January 1, 2019, for clinical rotations starting in July 2019. Q1-Q2 2019 clinical rotations are already filled.

St. Charles Health System partners with a number of regional LCME- and AOA-accredited medical schools to host third- and fourth-year medical students in core and specialty clerkships at our hospitals and clinics across Central Oregon.

More than 200 medical, PA and NP students per year participate in our clinical rotations in Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry and Radiology.

St. Charles has a number of Placement Letters of Agreement with medical schools, residency programs, and NP and PA Programs across the country, but effective 11/01/2018, we are no longer accepting requests for new PLAs. Please contact the clerkship coordinator at your school to determine if they have a PLA with St. Charles Health System on file. To be valid, it must be dated no earlier than 2016 and be signed by the current CFO of St. Charles.

To qualify to apply, unaffiliated students must have demonstrable ties to Central Oregon and the intention to return to the region to practice, as well as to be accepted into an AHEC Scholars Program. To apply to become an AHEC Scholar, visit the National AHEC Scholars website at Applications are accepted a minimum of six months in advance of the target rotation start date.

Unless you are a student with the OHSU School of Medicine or Western University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine Pacific Northwest, students from unaffiliated schools will be charged a weekly rotation fee of $795 per week. A deposit equivalent to 25 percent of the total rotation fee invoice is required to reserve a student’s slot. For example, if a student plans to be here for four weeks, their deposit will be $795. Once an application has been accepted, St. Charles will email the student an invoice with the total amount due for the duration of their clinical rotations at St. Charles. The balance will be due on the last day of the student's rotation. Unpaid balances may result in a delay in course completion.

If you would like to apply for a Job Shadow experience, visit the Cascade East AHEC website and follow the instructions included here:

In addition to full and engaged participation in the clinical rotation, the educational experience at St. Charles includes mandatory attendance at weekly Grand Rounds, student teaching sessions, clinical conferences and committee meetings. Each participant may be assigned a disease state on which to produce and present either a PowerPoint or a research paper to the other students and preceptors in their cohort. Students are responsible for compiling and presenting his/her own research in the best educational format suited to their subject matter.

The housing market in Bend is challenging and it can be difficult to find reasonably priced accommodations on a short-term basis. Residents and medical students from unaffiliated programs are responsible for finding and paying for their own housing and transportation. Our office maintains a brief list of St. Charles employees and Central Oregon residents who may have rooms available to rent during clinical rotations. If you would like to request this list, please email us at
